The Role of the Organ in the African-American Church: An Introduction to Gospel Harmony and Style

July 5, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 9:45 am

Pipe organists and Hammond organists have more in common than meets the eye. This workshop focuses on the intersectionality of sacred music skills as they bridge between the traditional and the African-American gospel style. We will focus on the music theory and stylistic traits of gospel music as they manifest themselves in the African-American church, and a discussion of the varying liturgical practices of the African-American church will frame the musical discussion.
