  • How to Negotiate and Advocate without Getting Fired Before You Start!
    808 Howell St
    July 6 @ 11:00 am
As organists, we know how to play hymns and a Bach fugue, but when it comes to employment issues, sometimes our skills are lacking. This workshop will help to empower all of us to advocate for ourselves when requesting a contract, negotiating benefits, etc.  Presented by the Committee on Career Development and Support and Dr. Vicki Schaeffer, Councillor for Membership, we will discuss tactics and strategies that can help all of us, whether we are just starting our careers or are looking at retirement. It is never too late to learn what it takes to make sure we are being treated as professionals.

Vicki J. Schaeffer, a native of Salem, Ohio, holds a DMus degree from Indiana University-Bloomington, with a double major in organ performance and church music, having studied with Marilyn Keiser and Larry Smith. Her dissertation and continuing research are in the field of Shaker hymnody. She also holds a MM from Kent State University and a BME from Mount Union College.

A church organist since the age of 14, Dr. Schaeffer is currently serving as Director of Music and Organist at St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is Artistic Director for Bella Voce, a semi-professional vocal chamber choir based in OKC. She is currently Director of College Counseling at Heritage Hall, a private college prep school in OKC, where she also teaches Music Appreciation and World Music. Schaeffer is currently serving as AGO Councillor for Membership and President of the Indiana Organists United, the alumni board for Indiana University organists. A member of the Association of Anglican Musicians and Pi Kappa Lambda, Schaeffer maintains an active recital and workshop schedule throughout the region, represented by Concert Artist Cooperative.
